The Lions managed it again, a second straight win again this season, with a fantastic 13-10 victory over the Maastricht Violent Vermin, who just looked completely outmatched by the Lions who seemingly have found their way again out of the darkness and have lit the league up, or at least their own division again. From a team that was sitting at 0-4 earlier in the season, whatever has been said, whatever this review has done, it’s already had some enlightening positives with quarterback Joe Chacon throwing for another solid game, going 36-for-48, with 269 yards and despite an interception and a single sack (his first game with only one sack this season), he managed a solid 5 yards touchdown completion to Anthony Rodriguez, marking the young tight end’s first career touchdown in only his ninth game, after previously being released by the Lions back in his draft class year of 2025.
The defense also lit it up, with cornerback Eugene Perry collecting another 8 tackles, and defensive end Len Price with three of the teams’ five total sacks. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Violent Vermin, with an amazing 11-tackle game from linebacker Jonathan Mitchell and while they were unlucky on the scoreboard, rookie wider receiver William Reuda managed another impressive 72 yards from quarterback Clayton Kleiber to give 531 yards on the season. Unfortunately, for them, they came up against a Lions side that was hungrier for the victory and hungrier for the game, and it consigns Maastricht to an eight straight defeat, after what looked to be a solid start to the season.
Speaking after the game, Team Owner Leam Mark Farrar was impressed with the play that his team showed out there, and how the two solid wins now, fourth for the season has really spurred on the whole organisation:-
“Look, we didn’t have the best start to the season, we admitted that we failed our team, our staff, our city and our fans in those opening games, but we were committed to resolving this one way or another, and we immediately set about reviewing every aspect of the team, from me and the board, to the players and we have made it clear to everyone that we expect 100% every single day. Our board has been changed, we have welcomed in new and different views to better expand our understanding and decision making, the coaching staff have and continue to look at the players and frankly speaking, if someone isn’t at the level we think they are meant to be at, or they are falling further behind, we will release them. We have the right people looking at all areas of our organisation and we make decisions purely on what is needed at this moment for our team moving forward”.
The Lions now get the chance to make three on the bounce with a matchup against the Star City Slamhounds, who are coming into the game off the back of two straight losses, including last up against the Corpses, going down 27-21 to them. The Lions hold a 3-0 overall head-to-head advantage over the Slamhounds, with the last meeting being in the 2025 pre-season which the Lions won 29-17, and these two last played back in 2022, with the Lions winning 31-14. Star City had a brilliant opening month of the season, going 3-1, but have seemingly fallen off the pace, but have held onto their divisional lead despite this. 8 touchdowns in the last three from quarterback Joseph Christian have also helped keep the Slamhounds in most games, with their only really tough matchup being against the North Stars.
On the Lions side, a resurgence from not just Joe Chacon but the whole squad has really propelled the Lions back into a small part of the conversation. Also with a 3-1 record over the last month, it is a far cry from the opening month of the season where the Lions were all but lost and with no clear direction, a tough loss also to the Corpses again set the team back a little, but since then with wins over Bwindi and now Maastricht, the Lions can look to the future with a much clearer outlook. An average of 243 yards per game from Chacon, five touchdowns in that span, and a receiver corps that seems to have found it’s groove again, has made the last month of games much more bearable for the fans. The only downside, and something that Star City can likely look to exploit, is the run game, with the running game being the low point, averaging only 63.75 yards per game, which is one of the lowest in the league.
The Lions do however, head into the game with almost a full roster ready to go for the matchup. The only few changes and injury concerns are with running back Brett Snow, who is still likely to be missing for the next month with his leg injury, however, there is talk that they may be in discussions for an injury settlement with his management team and he will likely be released from the roster and able to complete his recovery at home, but with the support of the organisation, retaining to continue paying his medical costs while he rehabilitates and recovers from it.
Game Prediction: Come on, three in a row!!!
