i think the fastest fix would probably be to have the gunners converge on the ball while it's still in flight, not run past the returner(while staying off to the sides of him, usually by 10-20 yards) then go "oh ****, he caught it!!!" and have to turn around and try to catch back up to him, this to me is completely unrealistic i can't think of a single game i've EVER seen where the gunners ignore the flight of the ball till it is either in the returner's hands or has hit the ground

Yep, they should be breaking on the ball

Fixed that for you.

There seems to be a missing attribute on players , Awareness or Vision. it's no wonder they can't go to the ball/carrier. Blind as a mole in coal

Gunners do not always follow the ball. I understand the reference used here but feel an equal amount o f the time the gunner is queuing the return man. They have little idea where the ball is. Instead they making decisions based on what others on the field are doing.

In another senerio the punted ball is nearing the goaline for a possible touchback and the return man could be doing a fake catch to lure the gunners out of place of a possible downing of the punted ball in side the 5 yard line.

It should go both ways and by having the gunners on punt follow the ball all the time is just unreal.

Note that we never said that the gunner should follow the ball. The gunner should break on the ball. By the time the gunners are ready to take an angle at the return man, the ball should be on a downward trajectory and the return man should be adjusting to the placement. Gunners should react to the return man's adjustment and break on the ball, which will soon enter their field of vision anyway. Right now, gunners run in a straight line 10 or 20 yards behind the return man if your gunner is really fast.

My comment was directed at the post by the author of this thread who stated "no one ever heard of Jack Christianson."

He was a stellar safety for the Detroit Lions and is a HoFer who played on 3 championship teams for Detroit in the 1950's. I admit I am a bit of an historian but he is pretty well known tbh.

I wrote it, to be mildly funny and take the edge off a stat based comment.

I'm old(ish...I don't feel old) and have watched the NFL obsessively since I was a child. I have never heard of him.

However,... I have now. Thank you sir.

He, and Yale Lary, both played safety in the Lions secondary and went on to be named HoFers. I believe they are the only team to have both their starting safties named to the Hall in the history of the NFL.

Hard to believe the Lions were ever a factor, but in the 50's they won 3 Championships

I agree with your opening statement though that Punt Returns seem a bit juiced up

HOF QB doesn't hurt, and from the stories I have heard, Bobby Layne was also was one of the coolest, funniest and toughest ever.

Lets start with an easy one. The player in question is todays game had 203 PR yards against me. The all time NFL record for PR yards in a game is 207 by LeRoy Irvin in 1981. My guy fell 4 yards short.

there gave you their Wikipedia's so you can learn or know more about them.
